The official start of fall is here! While that doesn’t mean temperatures will magically cool down right away, it does mean that it’s time to prep your home.
Yup, this means getting heating maintenance done—maintenance will help your heater work as efficiently and effectively as possible for as long as possible.
But just because we’re talking about your heater prep doesn’t mean you should forget about your air conditioner. After all, you want to set both your HVAC systems up for success. Read on as we uncover a helpful checklist for what to do with your air conditioner this fall.
Check for Signs of Repairs
The end of the season is no time to ignore any signs of repair needs in your air conditioner! First off, those repair needs can also affect your heater—if, say, your thermostat needs recalibrating or you have ductwork damage. Some signs that it’s time to call us for AC repairs include:
- Strange Noises Coming from the System
- Uneven Cooling
- Inexplicably High Energy Bills
- Anything That Seems Out of the Ordinary for Your Air Conditioner
Clean It Off
Over time, the outdoor condenser unit of your air conditioner can accumulate a lot of debris: dust, dirt, leaves, twigs, lawn mulch, you name it. These items can restrict airflow and therefore cause inefficiencies in the system.
It’s a good idea to brush off the system, and even clean it with a hose on low pressure. Keep in mind, if you’re going to cover your system, you want this water to completely dry off before doing so. While we don’t traditionally have bitterly cold winters, our temperatures can drop to below freezing. You don’t want the water turning to ice, and then thawing and getting sucked into the system.
Shut It Down
We don’t just mean that you should switch your thermostat to “heating mode.” You’ll want to shut down your air conditioning all the way. There is a switch in or near the condenser unit that completely shuts down the system.
Shutting the AC down will prevent it from sucking in any water or debris should a heatwave cause it to turn back on.
Cover It Up
Air conditioning covers can be purchased at most hardware stores. The cover will protect the outdoor unit from inclement weather during the cooler months when you don’t need your air conditioner, and this added protection will help set your air conditioner up for success when you need it again next spring!
