Tips For When A Heat Pump Won’t Switch Modes

The time to switch our heat pumps from heating mode to cooling mode for the season is just around the corner. When that time comes, you’ll want to easily switch modes so your heat pump system will start cooling your living space as effectively as it heated it this past winter.

The Maynard Man wishes that we could guarantee your heat pump would always work flawlessly, but the fact is that sometimes your heat pump may run into trouble, particularly if you haven’t kept up with biannual maintenance for the system or if your heat pump is aging.

One of the ways a heat pump can “misbehave” is by failing to switch modes. If this happens, please give The Maynard Man a call right away! In the meantime, read on to learn what may be going on with your heat pump.

You Might Have a Minor Heat Pump Problem

The first thing we want you to do when you discover your heat pump won’t switch from heating to cooling mode is check your thermostat! Check that it’s in cooling mode, yes, but also that you don’t have any pre-programmed setting that is interfering.

Sometimes it’s simply a matter of someone in your household having a different cooling preference than you and adjusting the thermostat accordingly. Or there could be a problem with the thermostat calibration, which we can fix for you!

Next, check to see if there is a fresh air filter in your system. This air filter is designed to protect the interior components of your heat pump from dust, dirt, and other debris that can get inside and harm its components. If it gets too clogged up, it restricts airflow going into your system, which can also impact how much air is able to get cooled and returned back into your home.

What If the Problem Is More Serious?

A common, and more serious, cause of a stuck heat pump is a broken reversing valve. This is the component responsible for switching the flow of refrigerant so that your heat pump can alternate between cooling and heating mode.

If the valve gets stuck during any part of the heating or cooling process, it won’t be able to switch modes. There are a number of things that can cause a broken reversing valve–including natural wear and tear. But not to worry when The Maynard Man is on your side, we can help remedy this for you!
