There are a number of things that can go wrong with a home comfort system. Sometimes it’s due to natural wear and tear. Other times, it can be a manufacturer defect, or even from an extenuating circumstance like bad weather affecting the outdoor unit.
But when it comes down to it, if the problems afflicting your air conditioner are becoming more and more common, costing you way too much money, and are paired with an aging system, it’s likely time to call The Maynard Man and start exploring your AC replacement options.
Wonder if that’s the case for you? Read on to learn some of the signs.
As we mentioned above, if your air conditioner problems are coupled with old age, it’s likely time to consider an upgrade. But what’s old age for an air conditioner?
Well, a well-maintained air conditioner can typically last about 10–15 years before needing replacement. Beyond this age, especially with the problems we’re about to mention, it’s time to give us a call.
Your System Sounds Odd
Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a silent air conditioner. You’ll always hear some noise. But you know better than anyone the typical noises you hear coming from inside and outside your home.
So if anything sounds off, it’s typically a cause for concern. For example, if you hear rattling, hissing, or clanging coming from your air conditioning system, it’s probably a sign that the system needs help. And if this isn’t the first time this has happened with your 10–15 year old system, then it may be time for a replacement.
Your Utility Bills Are Too High
You probably won’t find many people who say that their bills are exactly the cost they want them to be. After all, who wouldn’t want to lower their utility bills?
Well, you might be spending more on them than you need to be. Compare your energy bills to that of last year, and/or to what your neighbors are paying. Are yours a lot higher? This is a sign that something inside your home is working inefficiently, and it could very well be your air conditioner. After all, your HVAC system accounts for about half of all your energy use!
You Notice Low Airflow or Low Cooling
Hold your hand to one of the vents in your home. Do you notice low airflow? Is this happening anywhere else in the home? If the problem is widespread, it may be that you have a clogged air filter that you need to change, restricting airflow. These filters should be changed every 1–3 months, depending on the type of filter and level of contaminants in the home.
If the problem seems to be limited to a vent or two, then you might have ductwork damage.
The same goes for low cooling: you might be dealing with damaged ductwork. Or you could be looking at a refrigerant leak. Whatever the case, the best way to get it promptly fixed is by giving The Maynard Man a call!
