The Maynard Man Shares These Signs of an AC in Need of Repair

The Maynard Man is always here to help! Whether you’re seeking your first centralized air conditioning system for installation, need a replacement, want to schedule maintenance, or have a cooling system in disrepair, we’re the team to call.

The problem is, oftentimes, homeowners and household occupants don’t know when their air conditioner is in disrepair. Unless you schedule maintenance on a regular, annual basis (which you should be doing), it can be hard to know when your air conditioner needs service. That is, if you don’t know what signs to watch for.

So, what signs should you watch for that an air conditioner needs repair? We’ll dive into this below!

Sign #1: The System Is Making Strange Noises

“Wait,” you may be wondering, “is my air conditioner meant to be silent?”

Well, no. No air conditioner is going to be 100% quiet. You’ll hear the compressor running outside if you’re close enough to that side of your home. You’ll hear the blower fan whirring in the indoor unit, and you might hear gentle rattling or “crinkling” coming from the ductwork as the temperatures fluctuate when your air conditioner cycles on.

What you shouldn’t hear, however, is anything outside of the normal operational sounds you hear from day-to-day. This can include hissing—indicative of a refrigerant leak—clanging, banging, screeching, etc.

Give The Maynard Man a call if you suspect any noise is out of the ordinary. It’s worth the check-up!

Sign #2: Your Energy Bills Are Higher Than Average

Are you diligent about checking your energy bills over each month? If not, you may want to start looking. You should compare these bills to what you were paying last year, and if you can, compare them to what your neighbors are paying for similar HVAC use.

If yours are drastically higher, it’s a sign that something is working inefficiently in your home, and it could very well be your air conditioner. After all, HVAC systems account for half of all energy use in your home!

Sign #3: There’s a Loss of Cooling Power or Low Airflow

Sometimes these symptoms may go together, other times they won’t. For instance, if you have a refrigerant leak—the substance needed to actually make the cooling process possible—you’ll definitely notice a lack of cooling.

On the other hand, if you have ductwork damage, a clogged air filter, or a broken blower fan, you’ll feel low airflow coming from the vents.

Either way, it’s a sign of a problem, and you should give us a call right away!
