The Maynard Man on How to Stay in Hot Water

Ever heard the phrase, “You’re in hot water now”? The
Maynard Man is here to tell you…that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

In fact, we use hot water every day, multiple times a day—which
is often taken for granted. It’s essential for showering, bathing, and cleaning.
But we can’t enjoy the convenience of this without an efficient and effective
water heater.

If you find yourself or a member of your family constantly
complaining about taking cold showers—it may not mean that your water heater
isn’t working right. To stay in hot water, you may simply need an upgrade.

Are You Still Using a Conventional Tank Water Heater?

Tank water heaters are the most commonly seen, and they’re a
great choice for many homes. If you have a large family, a household with a
“shower hog” or two, or even if you host overnight guests fairly often, you may
not be one of those homes.

The size of your storage tank water heater determines how
much hot water you’ll have for a given period of time. Should you use it all
up, you’re without it until the next load of water is adequately heated. Maybe
you’ve accepted this as a fact of life and just carry on—but you shouldn’t!

Your Upgrade Options

You have a couple different options here, if your tank water
heater isn’t providing enough hot water from day to day. You can:

  • Get a Bigger Water Heater Tank: For households with 2-3 people, the Maynard Man recommends at least a 40 gallon tank. If you have a 4-5 person household, or even 3 people with a higher demand for hot water than average, you may want to go for 50-60 gallons. In households larger than that, 60-80 is ideal.
  • Go Tankless: While the initial purchase and installation are costlier than that of a storage tank unit, tankless water heaters last longer and are far more efficient. They work “on-demand,” meaning they don’t heat the water until a tap or appliance requesting it is turned on. Tankless water heaters can be overwhelmed if there is too much demand on it at once from multiple appliances and fixtures. Overall, however, by eliminating standby energy loss they are extremely efficient.
  • Consider a Heat Pump Water Heater: A new ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater has the power to save a home up to $3,500 in energy costs throughout its lifetime! It saves by functioning as a heat pump does, rather than generating heat to function, it transfers heat. This uses far less electrical energy.

No matter which direction you choose to go with your water
heater, make sure you contact The Maynard Man for your installation. Without
professional installation and follow-up maintenance, you can’t rely on your
water heater to work as it should, nor can you rely on keeping those energy
costs down.
