Hearing that you need heating repairs can send chills up
your spine—especially in the dead of winter! Let’s face it, nobody wants to face expensive repair needs.
But there is two ways you can bring down the expense.
The first way is to ensure you schedule annual heating
maintenance with The Maynard Man (biannual if you have a year-round heat pump
system). The second way is to give us a call at the first sign that you even
need a repair.
During your maintenance session, we’ll be able to alert you
to any small repair needs so you can get them on your schedule right away. But
there will always be those rare cases that repair needs crop up between
tune-ups, and for that reason it’s important for you to know the 3 most common
indicators that yours is in trouble. We’ve listed these below!
1)
You Hear Strange Noises Coming from the System
Some of the sounds we’ve heard described include screeching,
clanging, banging, and even hissing. None of these noises should be ignored!
This is especially true for hissing. Hissing typically indicates that you have
a refrigerant leak (if you’re using a heat pump) or a gas leak.
Many homeowners mistakenly believe that refrigerant is
something that’s supposed to deplete,
like gasoline does from a car. On the contrary, however, a heat pump is
supplied with enough refrigerant upon manufacturing that it should ideally last
the system’s entire lifespan. Refrigerant loss can lead to a number of problems
for the system functionality itself, while a gas leak can lead to health and
safety hazards for your family—this isn’t a repair need you want to sit on!
2)
You’re Spending Too Much on Your Energy Bills
We get it. This sign can seem a little subjective. We’re
sure everyone through Franklin and
the surrounding communities think their energy bill could be lower. The thing
is though, many of those people are right! And they don’t realize that the
reason they’re paying so much is because of inefficient heater operation.
Take a look at your heating bills and compare them to that
of last year. Or compare them to what your neighbors are paying for similar
use. If they’re drastically higher, this is a definite sign that something is
causing your heater to behave inefficiently and you need professional repairs.
3)
Your Thermostat Doesn’t Match the Temperature
You Feel
Does it seem like no matter how high you crank up your
thermostat, it doesn’t feel warm
enough? If you have uneven heating throughout your home, you might be looking
at a ductwork breach. Otherwise, it may be that your thermostat has something
wrong with it.
The good news about a malfunctioning or failing thermostat
is that this is a small component, and probably the least expensive part of
your HVAC system to replace. But you definitely should replace or upgrade it if something is wrong. This is the
brain of your cooling and heating system we’re talking about!
These are just a few of the most common signs that you may
need heating repairs. A couple other things you should beware include
short-cycling and a yellow pilot light. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call
if you have any questions.
